tapGal4/tapGal4 embryos show no obvious morphological defects, with the number and fate of neurons and glia not significantly altered in the CNS or PNS, compared to controls.
tapGal4/+ heterozygotic adults show a significant increase in the frequency of mild beta lobe axon midline crossing defects (seen from early pupal stages and in the adult), missing alpha lobes (in some of these cases, the beta lobe appears to branch into two bundles) and loss of dorsal projection of alpha/beta neurons in the mushroom bodies compared to wild type. In around one third of tapGal4/tapGal4 mushroom body clones, beta axons project beyond the mushroom body beta lobe domains (in severe cases, axons cross the midline and project to the contralateral lobe).

Presence of Dscam121/+, drlRed2/+, Abl4/+, Appld/+, stanE59/+, Vangstbm-6/+, Wnt5400/+ or sli2/+ does not significantly enhance frequency of mushroom body beta lobe axon overgrowth defects in tapGal4/+ brains. Presence of dsh1/+ or dsh6/+ significantly enhances frequency of mushroom body beta lobe axon overgrowth defects (midline crossing) in tapGal4/+ brains; dsh6/+ also significantly enhances frequency of missing alpha lobes.
tapGal4 is rescued by tapUAS.GFP/Scer\GAL4tap-Gal4
Expression of tapScer\UAS.T:Avic\GFP (driven by Scer\GAL4tap-Gal4) rescues lethality and mushroom body defects in tapGal4/tapGal4 flies (or beta axon overgrowth in mutant clones).
