Gene Group (FlyBase)
C2H2 ZINC FINGER TRANSCRIPTION FACTORS -
Zinc finger C2H2 transcription factors are sequence-specific DNA binding proteins that regulate transcription. They possess DNA-binding domains that are formed from repeated Cys2His2 zinc finger motifs. (Adapted from PMID:1835093, FBrf0220103 and FBrf0155739).
Protein Function (UniProtKB)
Probable transcription factor involved in the development of the adult pattern of macrochaetae. Required for accumulation of achaete (ac) and scute (sc) in proneural clusters. Probably acts by binding to the proneural cluster-specific enhancers of the ac/sc complex and increasing enhancer efficiency, thereby acting as a stimulator of ac/sc expression in proneural clusters. Also required for correct development of the embryonic/larval peripheral nervous system (PNS).
(UniProt, Q7YU81)
Summary (Interactive Fly)

zinc finger transcription factor - facilitates accumulation of proneural proteins Achaete and Scute by forming a transcriptional stimulatory loop

Structure
Protein 3D structure   (Predicted by AlphaFold)   (AlphaFold entry Q7YU81)

If you don't see a structure in the viewer, refresh your browser.
Model Confidence:
  • Very high (pLDDT > 90)
  • Confident (90 > pLDDT > 70)
  • Low (70 > pLDDT > 50)
  • Very low (pLDDT < 50)

AlphaFold produces a per-residue confidence score (pLDDT) between 0 and 100. Some regions with low pLDDT may be unstructured in isolation.

chn protein is expressed in neurons in the central and peripheral nervous system during embryogenesis. In the third instar larval antennal disc, it is expressed in Johnston's organ. In the eye disc, chn is strongly expressed at the morphogenetic furrow and in ocellar precursors. It is also found at lower levels in differentiating photoreceptor cells. In the leg disc, chn is detected in many sensory organ precursor cells (SOPs) such as mechanosensory and chordotonal organs. It is also found in SOPs in wing discs in the wing margin and in the dorsocentral region. In the larval brain, chn is expressed in the lobula of the optic lobe, in the central brain, and in the ventral nerve cord. In adult brain, staining is observed in photoreceptor neurons and in several brain regions.

chn represses the transcription of Dl by binding directly to consensus sequences at the Dl locus.

chn is required for the proper development of the embryonic peripheral nervous system and for the normal pattern of macrochaetae in the adult notum. chn and ac/sc appear to form a mutually autostimulatory loop that enhances accumulation of ac/sc protein in the proneural clusters of the notum macrochaetae.

chn encodes a C2H2-type Zinc finger protein.

The ebi/Smr co-repressor complex associates with Su(H) protein and represses chn transcription by competing with the activation complex including N protein intra cellular domain and Su(H) for occupancy of the chn promoter.

chn acts as a repressor of Dl expression.
