Detailed Description
Statement

The reduced fertility of bamΔ59/bamBW females is enhanced by combination with a single copy of bgcn1 : the females are sterile with completely tumorous ovaries.

Homozygotes have germline tumours in their gonads.

Germaria are undifferentiated and hyperplastic. Fusomes remain uniformly spherical rather than adopting the branched morphology characteristic of cystocytes.

Gametocyte differentiation defective; gonial proliferation unchecked; gonads of both males and females become engorged with gonial cells. Ovarioles appear sausage-like; testes smaller than normal.

Genetic Interactions
Statement
Reference

bgcn1/+ ; bamz3-2884/bamΔ86 females show germ cell hyperplasia. None of the germ cells contain the polyploid DNA complement that is diagnostic of nurse cell formation. These females are sterile.

Overexpression of bam with P{hs-bam.O} in a homozygous bgcn1 mutant produces a tumorous germ cell phenotype. Germ line stem cells are not lost in the adults of these heat shocked P{hs-bam.O} homozygous bgcn1 mutants, though they are eliminated in their bgcn1/+ siblings.

Xenogenetic Interactions
Statement
Reference

The ovarian defects observed in bamΔ59/bamΔ86;Dsim\bambam.T:Avic\GFP-YFP.Venus xenogenetic rescue females cannot be exacerbated by combination with a single copy of bgcn1. Additionally, combination with Dsim\bambam.T:Avic\GFP-YFP.Venus suppresses the tumorous ovary phenotype characteristic for bamBW/bamΔ59;bgcn1/+ double mutant flies.

Complementation and Rescue Data
Partially rescued by

bgcn1 is partially rescued by bgcnhs.PO

Comments

Homozygous bgcn1 females expressing bgcnhs.PO using heat shock have maturing egg chambers and germaria organised into morphologically distinct regions 1,2 and 3 that are formed as cysts are assembled. Ovaries in older animals also have egg chambers with 15 nurse cells and one yolk-accumulating oocyte. The females are not fertile. Late stage egg chambers (stage 12 and later) contain small oocytes, misshapen follicle cell layers and are not laid. Spermatogenesis has not been rescued in homozygous bgcn1 males expressing bgcnhs.PO using heat shock.
