Drives expression in the neurons of sugar-sensitive long, intermediate, and short labellelar taste bristles.

ScerGAL4Gr5a.8.5 drives expression in all sweet taste receptor neurons in the labellar taste hairs, and in about 9 segmental tarsal sugar-sensing chemosensory neurons in the prothoracic leg that project to the prothoracic ganglion.

ScerGAL4Gr5a.8.5 drives expression in adult abdominal multidendritic neurons with with dorsal processes extending along the left-right axis, as well as in multidendritic neurons with lateral processes extending anteroposteriorly; these major processes have several protruding dendrites. Additionally, expression is driven in laterally localized multidendritic neurons with extensive arborization. Expression is also observed in projections to the abdominal ganglion.

ScerGAL4Gr5a.8.5 is expressed in the sugar-sensitive neuron of a subset of the short labellar taste bristles.

ScerGAL4Gr5a.8.5 is strongly expressed in the sugar-sensitive neuron of all long, intermediate and short taste sensilla of the labellum.

ScerGAL4Gr5a.8.5 is expressed in all the sugar-sensitive receptor neurons of the gustatory sensilla of the labellum.

ScerGAL4Tre.8.5.cCa expresses in Tre (Gustatory receptor Gr5a) neurons.

ScerGAL4Tre.8.5.cCa expresses in approximately 30 neurons per labial palp, in one neuron in most sensilla.

Inhibition (using Hsap\KCNJ2IVS.10xUAS.EGFP) of Scer\GAL4Gr5a.8.5 cells in adult females results in a significant increase in preference for softer 100 mM sucrose-containing, but not plain, agarose for egg laying, compared to controls.

Inhibition (using Hsap\KCNJ2UAS.EGFP) of Scer\GAL4Gr5a.8.5 neurons in adults does not affect wind-induced suppression of locomotion or basal walking speed, compared to controls.

Inhibition (using Hsap\KCNJ2UAS.EGFP) of Scer\GAL4Gr5a.8.5 cells in adults does not significantly affect preference for sucrose, compared to controls; there is a significant reduction in proboscis extension reflex probability in response to labellar, but not tarsal, sucrose, but no significant effect on short term appetitive (sucrose) or aversive olfactory memory, compared to controls; unlike controls, there is no significant sugar-induced suppression of angular or linear velocity. When inhibition is restricted to a smaller set of cells (using Scer\FLP1FLPo.oc.Tag:NLS(SV40-largeT) and Scer\GAL80αTub84B.PG) significant sugar-induced suppression of angular and linear velocity is seen, similar to controls.

Thermogenetic activation (using TrpA1UAS.(B).cKa at 32[o]C) of Scer\GAL4Gr5a.8.5 neurons induces a high frequency of proboscis extension, compared to controls.

Ablation of Scer\GAL4Gr5a.8.5-expressing neurons does not affect sensitivity to the gustatory sex pheromone (S,Z,Z)-CH503: as in wild type, courtship defects are seen in these flies in response to (S,Z,Z)-CH503.

Inhibition (using Ork1Δ-C.UAS.EGFP) of Scer\GAL4Gr5a.8.5 cells in adults given a choice between sucrose solution and water does not affect water or sucrose consumption, compared to controls.
