bHLH domain of SREBP has been replaced by sequence encoding a GAL4::VP16 driver in the context of a genomic fragment that is expressed under the control of the native SREBP promoter. The protein produced is subject to the same physiologically-regulated proteolytic processing as wild-type SREBP. Thus, this construct acts as a reporter to follow SREBP protein cleavage in vivo.
